Fan of a Fan: The Album (usually written as Fan of a Fan the Album)^[3] is the debut studio album by American singer and rapper Chris Brown and American rapper Tyga, billed together as Chris Brown X Tyga and was released on February 20, 2015, by RCA Records, along with affiliated record labels; including CBE Records, Last Kings Records, Young Money Entertainment, Cash Money Records and Republic Records. The album serves as the sequel to their breakout mixtape Fan of a Fan (2010).^[4]

Singles[edit]

'Ayo' was released as the lead single^[5] on January 6, 2015. The track was produced by American record producers Mark Kragen and Nic Nac, whom Chris Brown and Tyga previously worked with on 'Loyal'.^[6]

'Bitches N Marijuana', which features a guest verse from West Coast rapper Schoolboy Q, was released as a promotional single on February 6, 2015. It was later sent to rhythmic radio as the album's second single on May 26.^[2]

At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 46, which indicates 'mixed or average reviews', based on six reviews.^[7] Gerrick D. Kennedy of The Los Angeles Times concluded that, 'Overwrought with rap cliches, Fan of a Fan is a formulaic heaping of bouncy bangers primed for the strip clubs that likely inspired it. There isn't much here, besides expletive-filled musings on sex, drugs, cars, money and dangerous misogyny'.^[13]

Commercial performance[edit]

Fan of a Fan: The Album debuted at number seven on the US Billboard 200 moving 66,000 album-equivalent units with 51,000 in pure album sales in the first week of release.^[14][15] In the second week the album fell at number 24, with 21,000 album-equivalent units and 12,000 in pure album sales.^[16] As of March 2015, the album has sold 72,000 copies and has been streamed 16 million times domestically.^[17]

In the United Kingdom, Fan of a Fan: The Album debuted at number seven on the UK Albums Chart and number one on the UK R&B Albums chart. The album was eventually certified Silver by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) for sales of over 60,000 copies in the UK.

In 2015, Fan of a Fan: The Album was ranked as the 144th most popular album of the year on the Billboard 200.^[18]

After two collaborative mixtapes and a couple big tag-team singles, 'Deuces' and 'Loyal,' that were close to unavoidable on commercial radio, a proper duo album from Chris Brown and Tyga was the next logical step. Despite two lead voices throughout, Fan of a Fan: The Album is similar to their preceding solo albums in that it is stuffed with guest appearances. Not one member of the all-male succession -- Ty Dolla $ign, 50 Cent, Pusha T, Fat Trel, Boosie Badazz, or Schoolboy Q -- is in top form, yet their contributions prop up the headliners. Neither one of the album's first two singles, 'Ayo' and 'B****es N Marijuana,' is on the same level as their previous hits as a duo, while a lot of what surrounds those tracks is routine, functional but not among either artist's best. Unsurprisingly, much of the material is a reflection of the carefree (and early-'90s) look of the album's packaging, with playful braggart jabs like 'She don't think that I can change, so I switched from a Benz to a Range' representative of the mentality. It's not all clowning around. There is some depth through a handful of slower, less rowdy cuts like 'Westside,' 'Girl You Loud,' and 'Better,' the last of which is a sweetly melodic, repentant ballad. Ultimately, this is likely to satisfy only the most devout sects of Brown's and Tyga's fan bases.
